A Dubai court has convicted a 32-year-old man of robbery after he assaulted another man and forcibly snatched a gold-plated chain from his neck during a confrontation arising from a financial dispute.

According to court records, the incident occurred as the victim was leaving an apartment where his family was staying in Dubai when he was suddenly confronted by the defendant.

Prosecutors said the defendant attacked the victim without warning, punching him in the face before forcibly removing a chain valued at approximately Dh700 from his neck.

Investigations further revealed that the defendant was carrying a knife at the time of the incident. Authorities said he used force to overpower the victim, enabling him to seize the chain and prevent any resistance.

The victim subsequently reported the incident to Dubai Police, triggering an investigation. Officers reviewed surveillance camera footage, collected witness statements and examined evidence gathered from the scene.

Police inquiries helped reconstruct the sequence of events and identify the suspect, who was later referred to the Public Prosecution and brought before the misdemeanour court.

In its judgment, the court found that the defendant had used physical force to unlawfully take the victim’s property without his consent.

The judges noted that the assault was carried out with the intention of depriving the victim of his property and that the use of force was instrumental in overcoming the victim’s resistance and facilitating the theft.

Relying on witness testimony, surveillance footage and other evidence presented during the proceedings, the court convicted the defendant of robbery by coercion.
